Whether you’re a parent, grandparent or young scholar, back-to-school is a big deal.
According to the National Retail Federation, it’s the second-biggest spending event of the year, with each set of parents shelling out about $630 on back-to-school purchases in 2015.
Whether that number will rise or fall in 2016 is yet to be seen, but it’s safe to assume that footwear will get a decent share of consumer wallets this back-to-school season.
Last year, total back-to-school footwear sales rose 4.8 percent, according to a report by Sterne Agee CRT analyst Sam Poser, driven by strength in casual-athletic, which saw a 25 percent sales gain in August 2015. (The back-to-school period in 2015 was measured as the period between July 25 through the week ending Sept. 12.)
While it may still be too early to be sure, there aren’t many trend surprises currently popping up for 2016. Instead, most of the usual players are set to do big numbers.
As usual, for their comfort and functionality, athletic brands continue to lead the pack with Under Armour rising in popularity among the back-to-school crowd. Meanwhile, Steve Madden is expected to make an appearance for those seeking trendy, fashion footwear styles.
Here are six of most popular shoe brands for back to school.
Nike (and Jordan Brand)
Vans
Under Armour
