Supportive and slip-free trainers (preferably in pop colors) are de rigueur for star trainer Russell Bateman’s grueling bootcamp-style workouts.
“These mimic the effects of going barefoot — reported to have many advantages and benefits for your overall health,” says Bateman. “Wearing these gets you closer to you primal self. Evolutionary footwear!” Vibram Fivefingers Bikila EVO, $120
Cheeky after-class snaps posted to his @russellSBC Instagram are as much a part of the SBC experience as punishing planks and push-ups.
Either pre- or post-class, Bateman recommends an all-green juice. “They give you instant energy before exercise and help you to recover and restore after workouts, too,” he says. Hard-and-fast SBC rule: just veggies, no fruit.
At SBC, weights often come in the form of fellow classmates. “It’s a very interactive way of exercising, but also quite playful and fun,” says Bateman.
Bateman is particular when it comes to shoes suitable (and smart enough) for training. “Not only do these look great, but when it comes to squatting, they allow you to [go] into a deeper position through increased ankle range of motion,” he says. “This will help you to improve your overall position, too, as you’ll find yourself sitting more upright. A more upright torso means more chance of keeping hold of that barbell and sending it in the right direction — up! This heel also allows you to activate far more of your musculature.” Reebok Crossfit Lifter 2.0, $150
An SBC signature group circle formation aids in resistance training and classmate bonding.
After class, Bateman and his disciples descend on London’s Natural Kitchen for his recommended breakfast: eggs, avocado and smoked salmon. “It’s full of protein and good fats, which will keep you full much longer,” he says. Natural Kitchen, 55 Baker Street, London.
