Shoe of the Week: FN’s Best Picks for Spring 2019
Week of Oct. 15: Emu Australia
The fuzzy slipper is a staple in living rooms, but lately, celebs like Cardi B and the Kardashian clan have taken the furry slide to the streets. For spring ’19, Emu Australia offers a chic take on the trend with the Warden Stinger, featuring a sheepskin upper, soft EVA midsole and a durable rubber bottom that’s ready to hit the pavement.
Week of Oct. 1: Francesco Russo
Rainboots, by nature, are practical footwear, but the past few seasons have shown that the slick look of rain gear can be applied to just about anything, including this ankle boot by Francesco Russo. The style is made from plexiglass and embroidered calf leather, done in a Western-inspired floral motif for a little extra flair.
Week of Sept. 24: Fendi
The fisherman’s sandal has humble origins, but for resort ’19, Fendi amped up its women’s version, the T-Rex, with athletic accents such as mesh padding under the straps and a cushy heel pad. With its thick rubber sole, this might become the warm-weather alternative to the chunky dad sneaker.
Week of August 27: Tabitha Simmons x Johanna Ortiz
For the second installment of her collaboration with Johanna Ortiz, Tabitha Simmons adopted one of the exotic prints from the Colombian designer’s resort ’19 collection to reinvigorate her best-selling Connie sandal. Here, lilac florals blossom against a tangerine-colored satin backdrop, while a new silk ankle tie lends a final feminine touch.
Week of August 13: Manolo Blahnik
Like a gift to the heavens, Manolo Blahnik has crafted a sumptuous offering for resort ’19, including a series of heels inspired by the god of the arts himself, Apollo. Blahnik’s stiletto-heeled Tilda mule, draped here in verdant green satin, blossoms with a jewel-embellished laurel wreath.
Week of August 6: Charlotte Olympia
Charlotte Olympia’s idiosyncratic footwear tends to be more divalike than domestic, but for resort ’19, the British designer created a trio of flats that would feel quite at home on grandma’s couch. The Daisy slipper features a hand-stitched design that artisans in Italy embroidered onto its canvas upper, making it a veritable doily for the feet.
Week of July 30: Erdem
Erdem Moralioglu is known for ultrafeminine Victorian-inspired frocks, so his new casual sneakers come as a bit of a surprise. The designer is debuting rubber-soled slip-ons in his resort collection, using materials as luxe as his ready-to-wear, such as this pink velvet, punctuated with a sensuous knot.
Week of July 23: Danner
After decades in the boot business, Danner has found another way to own the outdoors with its first trail trainers. For spring ’19, the brand is going light and fast with the Trail 2650 shoe for men and women. It boasts a Vibram Megagrip outsole, breathable mesh lining and OrthoLite insoles.
Week of June 18: Creatures of Comfort
The midheel slingback is a trusty shoe for practical women everywhere, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring, as proved by Creatures of Comfort. The New York-based brand’s new pre-spring navy Diana style with a block heel is lined with multihued leather piping, creating a Mondrian-esque statement.
