Proenza Schouler Resort 2016: Shoe Highlights

Proenza Schouler is bringing its footwear back to earth. After a few seasons of playful experimentation with their runway shoes, design duo Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez pared down their footwear category with a more practical, wearable focus this resort season —specifically looking to flats and block heels.

For resort ’16, the shoes can be imagined on a much wider customer base. Mule-style lace-up oxfords were treated with cut-out eyelets, as well as embossed leathers. For fall ’15, the label’s footwear had focused on a flashier woven leather and fringe treatment, done on mule sandals with a curved heel. The look was eye-catching, indeed, but with a $1,000 price tag, not exactly the most achievable.

For resort, the kitten-heel silhouette was also presented in a classic cap-toe slingback as well as a tri-strap style. Even the brand’s most towering look — a strappy heeled sandal – conveyed practicality with its sturdy block heel in a mixed wood finish.

With an eye to wearability, the collection was, overall, safe — striking a balance between practicality and design innovation is something the label is still working out. But the pragmatism here is refreshing.
