When Katie Holmes wore a dress-over-jeans outfit to the 2022 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball concert in New York City, the internet lost its mind over her Y2K-inspired look. Despite the fact that Jingle Ball calls for a more relaxed dress code and early aughts fashion has been making a comeback for some time, Holmes fans weren’t ready for the return of this nostalgic outfit formula. In fact, most social media users were in such disbelief they thought it was a resurfaced image from a past decade.
According to The New York Times, Holmes’s stylist, Brie Welch, shared that “she [Holmes] said she wanted to wear sneakers because it was a concert and obviously there would be a lot of dancing to Dua Lipa (and nothing is more comfortable!).”
Holmes’ thought process is entirely valid. While designer heels would instantly elevate the look of a strapless top and frayed-edge jeans, the most comfortable women’s sneakers allow you to really enjoy your night out, especially during long hours of standing and dancing during a concert.
The designer sneaker market has come a long way due to the growing demand from fashionistas for comfortable and functional footwear. Since fashion designer Phoebe Philo made Stan Smiths her go-to shoe in 2015 and Victoria Beckham famously ditched her signature high heels back in 2016, it seems only natural that chic sneakers would become the norm on red carpets in 2022.
While the internet continues to debate the controversial Y2K look, there’s one thing we know for sure: a versatile designer sneaker is a must-have for your footwear rotation.
