Acrylic nails are popular not only because they look great, but also because they are known to last for weeks. While a bit more complicated than your basic DIY mani, an acrylic manicure is achievable at home — with the right tools, of course.
The key ingredients you’ll need are acrylic liquid and acrylic powder. When combined with liquid monomer, an acrylic powder will solidify and harden into a molded shape. Keep in mind that acrylic powder comes in clear and pigmented options. If you choose a clear powder, it will serve as a canvas that you can paint over with any color you want.
To help you get started, we rounded up eight acrylic powders for flawless DIY results. We chose options from trusted nail brands like Mia Secret, Young Nails and Modelones, as well formulas designed to be bubble-free, non-yellowing, self-leveling and lift-resistant. Read on to shop some great acrylic powders and discover tips on how to apply acrylic nails.
How to Apply Acrylic Nails
First, blend your acrylic liquid and powder together in a dipping jar or dappen dish to create a small bead that’s malleable and spreadable over the natural nail. Once the acrylic liquid and powder have been combined, grab a sculpting brush and nail forms, or tips, to achieve an even application. (Nail forms act as a temporary foundation to help you build and shape the nail as you apply the acrylic formula.)
Before removing the forms or tips, make sure to take a file to the false nail to create the specific shape and length you want. From there, let your nails air dry and go over the nail with a top coat to enhance the shine.
