At the Met Gala, everything reaches new heights including all the heels.
For this year’s event, there was one common motif beyond the night’s actual theme — sky-high platforms. Stars across all industries broke out their tallest heels and lifted shoes to elevate their evening wear at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The Met Gala — known as the fashion industry’s Oscars — was first introduced in 1948 and now, each May, the annual fundraising event celebrates the opening of the spring exhibition. This year, however, the Met Gala takes place in September after the 2020 event had been canceled. Last night’s theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” in honor of the first exhibit that will open on September 18.
Jennifer Lopez kicked off the common trend of platforms in shoes from an unexpected brand: her own DSW label. The “On the Floor” musician tapped Ralph Lauren for her evening wear. The plunging design included endless layers of beading with subtle designs across the entirety of the brown fabric. To elevate the number further, the number included an Indiana Jones-style leather belt, wide-brim hat and furry shawl.
On her feet, the “Hustlers” actress decided to give her look another boost in towering metallic sandals. The sky-high heels featured a lifted toe and securing straps across the ankle, all balanced atop a tall block heel. As credited by her stylist Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn, the heels come courtesy of DSW for an affordable twist.
Serena Williams also decided on a metallic heel for her 2021 Met Gala attire, tapping Gucci for the entire look. The tennis pro decided to bring the drama in a layered ensemble that tucked a glittering silver jumpsuit under an unmissable pink and white feathered cape coat.
On her feet, Williams added a boost of over 4 inches in height to her frame with silver platform sandals adorned with chic bow finishes.
Kate Hudson also the perfect marriage of old Hollywood glamour and Gen-Z style trends for the 2021 Met Gala last night.
The “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” actress arrived on the red carpet in a full pink moment, tapping Michael Kors for her evening look. The ensemble offered up a very 2021 twist on classic style thanks to her glittering bralette and maxi skirt set and couture feathered coat.
To elevate the look further, the actress picked Giuseppe Zanotti for her footwear of choice. Hudson’s pick, in particular, came balanced atop a towering block heel with a squared front and a peep-toe silhouette.
For the event, Camila Cabello herself also reached new heights as she modeled a purple glittering Michael Kors set complete with a crop top and high-slit skirt; complete with a fuzzy handbag and a wavy hairdo, the “Senorita” singer looked like a new-age Cher in an outfit that echoed her “Sonny & Cher” days.
As for footwear, Cabello continued the monochrome appeal of her attire with purple Jimmy Choo platforms set atop a lifted heel as Mendes chose a unique black boot with a metallic block base.
