It’s safe to say Gwen Stefani has solidified herself has a style icon. The singer’s music career spans nearly 30 years and in between she has worn — and started, no less — the most nostalgic fashion trends in recent decades.
While the ’90s certainly was the impressive beginning to Stefani’s style evolution, it was in the 2000s when she gained traction as a fashion “influencer,” so to speak. Now, her signature look is more relevant than ever.
Low-rise jeans, flatform slides, thong sandals and cropped tanks all made a comeback in 2020, and will continue this year, as celebrities such as Bella Hadid, Miley Cyrus and Dua Lipa continue to wear recreate the memorable Y2K aesthetic.
It’s clear that skinny jeans are out and if you’re looking for inspiration on how to pull off baggy, wide-legged pants, Stefani is your holy grail.
Just look her 2009 music video for “Hollaback Girl.” She’s seen stomping around a California high school in baggy, low-rise jeans and sneakers. Stefani completed her look with a beanie and an extreme cropped white tank, that exposed her stomach and pink bra straps. The look holds up as we’ve recently seen in Stefani’s new music video, “Let Me Reintroduce Myself.” In the video, she recreates her most recognizable ensembles, including this exact “Hollaback Girl” look.
King Princess is known to rock a white tank, too, which looks very much-inspired by Stefani. Plus, Hailey Bieber recently posted her take on the cropped style.
Then comes the whale tail. The defining 2000s-trend, which exposes the wearers thong, is back. Dua Lipa might as well have stepped out of a time capsule when she was photographed in New York in September. The “Don’t Start Now” singer wore a baby tee and baggy low-rise denim that showed off her undergarments that could be seen above her hips aka the whale tail.
Stefani, however, was the master trendsetter here. She wore this trend in Eve’s “Let Me Blow Your Mind” music video as part of another iconic outfit, complete with the red and white striped bikini top.
