Fashion insiders are mourning the death of British supermodel and ’90s style icon Stella Tennant, who has died at age 50.
Her family confirmed her “sudden” passing in a statement this afternoon: “It is with great sadness we announce the sudden death of Stella Tennant. Stella was a wonderful woman and an inspiration to us all. She will be greatly missed,” they wrote in a statement.
Known for her androgynous look, Tennant dominated the nineties modeling scene. She worked closely with Burberry and Chanel, and had recently also designed collections for the Chanel-owned Holland & Holland. She was a muse to the late Karl Lagerfeld.
Donatella Versace recalled meeting Tennant at the beginning of the model’s career. “I cherish every moment we spent together,” Versace wrote on Instagram.
Stella McCartney lamented a great loss. “What sad, horrific news to end this already shocking year! My heart goes out to your stunning family who must be in such undeserving pain. I am speechless…Rest in peace, you inspiring woman. Your soul and inner beauty exceed the internal perfection, Stella. May you ride high above us all on the most perfect horse, eternally in peace.”
New York Times fashion critic Vanessa Friedman wrote on Twitter that Tennant was the “coolest of the aristo-models.” “I’ll never forget seeing her walk in Helmut Lang shows. She defined off-hand chic,” the fashion director wrote.
