It’s official: The leopard print midi skirt is the skirt of the summer.
While the jungle-patterned trend has been circulating for a while, the leopard print skirt has exploded in the last week thanks to @leopardmidiskirt, a hilarious Instagram account documenting the movement taking over New York City streets. The account was started by Rilka Noel, a 23-year-old who works at Kith.
After seeing the skirt on the streets, Noel decided to document the trend she was spotting in the wild by making an Instagram dedicated to the skirt. Since then, fashion news outlets have been declaring the leopard frock to be the ultimate summer staple for 2019.
Style experts have traced the trend back to Realisation Par’s The Naomi skirt, which was released last summer. Since then, fast-fashion brands have created their own version of the leopard print midi skirt, pushing the trend even further into the spotlight.
But with such a bold choice of skirt, you may be asking yourself: “What shoes should I pair with this?” While a black or white T-shirt seems to be the trend of choice when styling up top, here are eight types of shoes that can complete the look, from Koio sneakers to Teva sandals.
1. The White Sneaker
A simple white sneaker in your closet is a summer must. Slip into the Koio Capri Triple White with your leopard skirt, and you’ve got yourself one chic summer outfit.
2. The Two-Strap Sandal
Elevate your style with the two-strap sandal. These Two Part Block Heels from Boohoo in nude (Mocha) or black are the ideal heels to pair with the skirt of the summer.
3. The Elevated Summer Slide
Show off some extra flair with an elevated slide. The Gunner Slide Sandal by Sam Edelman is the perfect shoe to tap into your inner-wild child, complete with beaded detailing on the upper and whipstitching on the sole.
4. The Flip Flop High Heel
Be daring with this Insta-worthy bold style. If you opt for this throwback trend, make sure to go with a simple color, like this black Calvin Klein Monty sandal.
5. The Naked Sandal
We’re seeing the naked sandal everywhere this summer. Pair the shoe with a leopard skirt, and you’re good to go. With its fun croc print, the Joie Malou Heel from Revolve is a great option to tap into the two trends.
6. The Sports Sandal
A chunky sport sandal is a must-have this summer. Try to stick to a neutral or beige when rocking the leopard print midi skirt trend. The Teva Hurricane Drift is a great option when looking to style the summer skirt of the season.
7. The Leopard Print Shoe
You can pull off leopard on leopard without clashing — just make sure it’s a shoe with minimal coverage. The Fifi Slide Sandal from Donald Pliner is one option to spring for. With its chunky sole, the shoe gives off a total Spice Girls vibe, perfect for unleashing your inner Scary Spice.
8. The Mom Mule
Pair this ’90s-inspired shoe with your leopard print skirt for a night on the town or date. The red mule with crocodile detailing is the perfect subtle pop to your summer go-to look.
