Dec. 19, 2019: To celebrate their special release of the Air Force 1 Gore-Tex, Nike and Foot Locker are holding an eco-conscious event. On Friday, Dec. 20 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., the brands are hosting an afternoon of planting and gardening at the Belvedere Park Community Garden in East Los Angeles, Calif. Attendees will receive free giveaways; they will also have the opportunity to learn more about sustainability and why it’s important.
Dec. 18, 2019: Portland, Ore.-based outdoor brand Keen has been awarded the 2019 Supply & Demand Chain Executive Green Supply Chain Award for its “consciously created” approached. The SDCE Green Supply Chain Award recognizes companies that have made sustainability part of their supply chain strategy. Keen has taken eco-conscious measures, including using leather from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries, sourcing PFC-free water repellency and utilizing pesticide-free probiotics in its footbeds. “We extend our congratulations to this year’s award recipients and their commitment to green initiatives,” Supply & Demand Chain Executive editor John R. Yuva said in a release. “The entries serve as best-in-class examples for other companies to model and create value for their supply chains.”
Dec. 13, 2019: Spanish lifestyle brand Desigual has teamed up with Spanish sustainability brand Ecoalf, for a capsule collection of apparel, accessories and footwear that Ecoalf produces out of recycled waste and raw materials. The single shoe, a sneaker, is made from five recycled plastic bottles. Among the materials Ecoalf recycles are plastic bottles, used tires, fishing nets and wool. The sneaker, retailing for $200, is available on an online wait list.
Dec. 10, 2019: The Attico has launched upcycled capsule collection Call Me Back. The line, available exclusively on the brand’s e-commerce platform, features six vintage fur coats reworked by designers Gilda Ambrosio and Giorgia Tordini plus three pairs of stiletto pumps in black, red and pink, embellished with leftover Swarovski crystals. There is also cherry pink lipstick created in partnership with eco-conscious French makeup brand La Bouche Rouge. It comes with a vegan leather case. This marks the brand’s second foray into upcycling, following a capsule last year with denim label Re/Done. A surreal short film to promote the collection features model Jazzmine Berger, backed by the strains of Velvet Underground track “Venus in Furs,” which she selects from a hotel jukebox.
Dec. 9, 2019: Direct-to-consumer sneaker brand Lane Eight is launching into the eco-friendly market with the debut of two additions to its Trainer AD 1 style detailed in sustainable and recycled materials. Among the components being used are recycled plastic bottles from supplier Sincetech that have been fashioned into polyester yarn to create the knit uppers. Next is an algae-based midsole from supplier Bloom, which has been harvested from harmful algae blooms that would otherwise destroy marine ecosystems. The shoe is also done in nature-inspired colors, Mint and Birch. Going forward, the company plans to move away from all animal-derived materials. The shoes retail for $95 and are available online beginning Dec. 11.
Dec. 3, 2019: Reebok is further embedding itself in the sustainability discussion with a new performance running sneaker that’s scheduled to hit stores in the fall. The Forever Floatride Grow is an update of its acclaimed Forever Floatride Energy sneaker and part of the brand’s mission to reduce petroleum-based plastics in its footwear. Reebok said each component of the fall ’20 shoe was researched and tested to find the most sustainable natural ingredients that would meet its performance standards for a running model. It also touted the style’s cushioned and responsive midsole, made from sustainably grown castor beans, as its most significant sustainability advancement. The shoes also feature naturally biodegradable and sustainably sourced eucalyptus-tree uppers, Bloom algae foam insoles and natural rubber outsoles.
