Transparency is definitely in for Nike right now, as it’s set to introduce yet another sneaker with a see-through upper this summer. You can think of it as a takedown of the sought-after React Element 87 if you want, but the EXP-X14 is ready to create some buzz of its own.
Nike’s latest performance-meets-lifestyle sneaker released today, but if you’re not familiar with it, we’re here to break down everything you need to know about the hot new silhouette.
Like the popular Nike Zoom Fly and aforementioned React Element 87 before it, the EXP-X14 features a seamless blend of performance technology and modern materials (i.e., the translucent upper) with a look designed for casualwear. The shoe utilizes the brand’s proprietary React foam, a soft and responsive material that provides all-day comfort whether you’re running a race or walking the streets.
If you’re wondering about the name of the shoe itself, “EXP” stands for experiment, while “X14” is a reference to the brand’s original internal code name for React foam during its development. The shoe has another number printed on the shoe, N3546, which represents legendary runner Steve Prefontaine’s fastest mile of 3 minutes and 54.6 seconds, a nod to Nike’s rich history in running.
The design of the shoe combines retro and modern elements in a sleek and speedy-looking silhouette. The upper is a modern take on the Zoom Drive, a late-’90s running shoe, while the shape and design of the sole unit take inspiration from the cutting-edge Zoom VaporFly 4%, which the brand hails as their fastest shoe ever.
The EXP-X14 is available now via Nike SNKRS and at select retailers in both men’s and women’s sizing. In addition to the black, orange and volt launch colorway, the shoe is available in black and white iterations within the new boldly branded “Just Do It” pack.
