For spring ’17, Rick Owens sent out a cerebral, stunning collection of wafting silks, fringed wools and crunched bulbous shapes for Paris Fashion Week. Lest it all be too otherworldly, the footwear message was rooted in the familiar. Very familiar, in fact, for this American in Paris: cowboy boots.
But let’s not confuse things — this was not the stuff of spaghetti westerns, but rather, a more unusual take on the classic, done in luxe exotics skins and in coordinating shades plus choice metallics. A super-squared shape replaced the unusual snip toe, while the heel sloped into a demi-wedge.
Stopping just below the knee, they will surely occupy the calves of Owens’ cultish followers next season.
