Valentino’s creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli must have been feeling tame for fall. Compared to the brand’s spring ’16 show featuring extravagantly-beaded sneakers, the footwear offering here was more trad than rad. Or maybe the right word is sensible.
There were tiny flourishes, though. Embossed croc penny loafers, in a sumptuous burgundy leather, had slight metal studding on the midsole. The same color was done on a smooth leather derby. Black leather brogues had gold studding, while Valentino’s signature rockstuds were on boots in a matte finish.
Following a season of in-your-face shoes, perhaps the designers were more focused on details this season. The same studding on jeans were carried through on the shoes, for instance, which made for a nice through line.
Finishing touches like a pale pink ribbed sock helped elevate the looks too — never estimate the power of luxe socks, guys.
