The mood: The eminent end of the Hedi Slimane era. And look back at late eighties glitz.
The front row: Catherine Deneuve, Jane Birkin, Francois Pinault.
The soundtrack: A live moderator reading out look numbers in French and English, reviving an old Yves Saint Laurent tradition.
The shoes: Pointy spike heels. Called the Paris pumps, they came in multiple shades of patent, leather and even polkadot for more brazenness. Vamps formed a retro v and some had couture-style bows at the back heel. They were paired with sheer black hosiery and flashy little cocktail concoctions for an extremely leggy evening look.
The verdict: This wasn’t the newsy shoe statement one has come to expect from Saint Laurent. But it’s not as if the house is suffering for attention (or sales) these days. Even still, it had era-true appeal.
