Expect the unexpected from Rei Kawakubo.
Comme Des Garçon’s latest men’s show in Paris offered a dizzying number of references to take in: the extra-sharp pointy boots, the floral headpieces, the patchwork pockets on suits. In her own twisted way, Kawukubo is a romantic, after all, and her latest show appeared to be an homage to the most enigmatic inspiration of all: life.
The elaborate floral millinery celebrated nature’s wonders, of course. But a closer look at the shoes saw an appreciation of sport seep in — the slip-on sneakers done in a water shoe-esque nylon, the leather boots with buckling similar to those seen on equestrian boots. We can’t bear to imagine the Comme customer on any sort of playing field, but the sporty shoes in their own right is perhaps doable.
There was also an element of hide and seek. Certain laceup oxfords had three slashed straps, while patent dress shoes had a piece of leather snapped atop the toe cap — a strikingly offbeat shoe, but not nearly as weird as one would expect from the brand.
