In 2009, when the Obama family celebrated their first Christmas in the White House, Barack and Michelle Obama’s daughters, Malia and Sasha, were just 11 and 8 years old, respectively.
Now 18 and 15, we’ve seen the girls blossom into stylish teenagers. But they’re not the only ones whose style has grown. The first lady’s look has also evolved from simple chic to more daring — she’s been looking to bold dresses by designers Versace, Gucci and others lately.
This year, the first lady received the White House Christmas tree wearing a fitted black coat and pants and a pair of slouchy mid-calf boots. But during her first White House Christmas, her outfit was starkly different. She opted for a plaid high-neck blouse, a red sweater, red belt, black pants and plain black flats.

In addition to greeting the White House Christmas tree, the first family participates in several other Christmas traditions in Washington. The first lady has important duties including presenting the White House Christmas decorations, volunteering with “Toys for Tots” and reading Christmas stories to patients at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

The whole family always attends the White House Christmas tree lighting, which includes performances by major music artists. The Obamas also made appearances at the annual Christmas in Washington event, which ended in 2014.

After celebrating in Washington ahead of Christmas, the Obamas jet to Hawaii, where they spend the holiday. FN already spotted Malia Obama wearing a pair of chunky sandals upon the family’s arrival there earlier this week.
