Get ready to connect the fashion dots — today’s National Polka Dot day. And, what better way to mark the occasion than than with a pair of polka dot shoes.
For a bit of background about the pattern, it consists of an array of circles. While there are more classic versions of equally sized dots, more modern interpretations are found in more randomly spaced, sized and colored.
The iconic pattern was even sung about in 1960, in the hit single, “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” which chronicles the story of a girl too shy to emerge from the water in her barely-there swimsuit.
Going back in time, polka dots were a popular look in the ’30s, hitting the big time again in the ’50s. In fact the legendary cartoon character Minnie Mouse, is known in fashion circles for her trademark polka dot dress.
Polka dots have also made their way into footwear circles from athletic brands such New Balance and Adidas adding them to kicks to high-end designer labels such as Fendi and Manolo Blahnik also paying homage to the retro look.
Like the size of the dots, the color combinations are limitless. However, my favorite remains classic black-and-white that blends sophistication with whimsy.
