Number 23 is returning to the big screen, but this time, it’s LeBron James who is set to star in the sequel to “Space Jam.”
The live-action/animated film, made famous in 1996 by Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny, will be getting a second installment after years of rumors, according to multiple Hollywood reports.
The Warner Bros. film is still in its early phases. Screenwriter Andrew Dodge is set to pen the script, while “Fast & Furious 6’s” Justin Lin is in talks to direct.
The original movie brought Jordan and the Looney Tunes characters together to play a basketball game against alien slavers to determine their freedom. The film grossed more than $230 million worldwide and is the highest-grossing basketball film of all time.
Bugs Bunny and the Jordan Brand have had a relationship since 1992, when the original Hare Jordan collection debuted and the two teamed up for a Jordan Brand commercial. Since then, Jordan released two Hare Jordan anniversary products in April 2015, featuring the Air Jordan 1 Mid “Hare” and the girl’s Air Jordan 1 Mid “Lola.”
James is clearly a fan, as he was seen sporting the original white Air Jordan 7 Hare Sneakers before Game 2 of the 2015 NBA Finals.
Now that James is set to star in “Space Jam 2” — and considering the Cleveland Cavaliers star has a lifetime deal with Nike — will the Oregon-based brand release a Looney Tunes-inspired LeBron signature? Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, James and the Cavaliers host the Atlanta Hawks tonight in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinals series.
