Talk about a throwback.
Danish inventor Thomas Dam’s famous, rainbow-haired troll dolls — one of the toy world’s biggest crazes — are making a triumphant return in the new DreamWorks Animation movie “Trolls,” which premieres today in theaters across the country.
From the creators of “Shrek,” the 3-D-animated film follows the adventures of two brave trolls, Poppy and Branch, who set off on a quest to save their village from destruction by the evil, troll-eating Bergens creatures. It features the voice talents of Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Zooey Deschanel and Gwen Stefani.
To help kids get into the “Trolls” spirit, we rounded up a selection of some of the coolest licensed shoes and slippers inspired by the movie. Indie brand Akid created an adorable “Trolls” collaboration, featuring an assortment of sneakers, lace-up boots and even a few faux-fur slides inspired by the dolls’ wild, rainbow-hued hair. Priced from $40 to $90, the shoes are available through the label’s website, Akidbrand.com.
For a more affordable option, there also are a number of private-label, “Trolls”-themed styles from discount retailers including Kmart and Payless ShoeSource. Among the looks are light-up sneakers and cozy slippers trimmed in faux fur. In addition, “Trolls” licensee BBC International has created a collection of styles available at major retailers nationwide.
In a special partnership with DreamWorks, department store giant Macy’s is stocking a wide range of “Trolls” merchandise across multiple categories, including a must-have pair of fuzzy, multicolored women’s slippers designed by Betsey Johnson (for all those troll-loving moms looking to capture a little childhood nostalgia). To mark the opening weekend of the new movie, Macy’s store associates around the country will celebrate “Trolls” day on Saturday by donning colorful wigs, clothing and accessories.
