USA’s Ginny Thrasher Wins First Gold Medal At Rio Olympic Games Wearing Nike

The first gold medal awarded at the 2016 Olympic Games has gone to American rifle shooter Ginny Thrasher.

The 19-year-old’s 208 score set a record in the women’s 10-meter air rifle competition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday, besting China’s silver medalist Du Li and bronze medalist Yi Siling.

Wearing a pair of neon green Nike sneakers, the West Virginia University sophomore stood at the center podium and accepted her gold medal while the National Anthem played.

The Rio Games kicked off with an opening ceremony on Friday.
