When Solebox co-founder Hikmet Sugoer shocked the sneaker community by announcing in late 2015 he was leaving the store he founded, it wasn’t immediately clear what was next for the trailblazing designer. After churning out dozens of coveted Solebox collaborations over the years — including March’s Adidas Ultra Boost Uncaged, which regularly resells for up to $700 — Sugoer’s next move has been anticipated by sneaker fans.
He has been teasing his own sneaker, known as the Sonra, on Instagram for months, and now we’re finally learning more about Sugoer’s plans for the future. The Sonra, which is Turkish for “next,” is a handcrafted, made-in-Germany sneaker that utilizes a classic running silhouette. The Sonra is made of premium materials such as vegetable tanned cow leather — “Even the cows are from Germany,” Sugoer said — and premium suede.
Based on the images Sugoer has shared on Instagram thus far, the Sonra is extremely limited — just 100 pairs produced of each colorway. Furthermore, it appears that the Sonra will eschew a traditional sneaker release, at least for the time being. On Sunday, Sugoer treated fans to a Halloween surprise by releasing seven pairs of the pink “BAE” (Before Anyone Else) Sonra colorway on his website.
“If you clicked on this and you were fast enough to check out: You will be one of the first 7 people to own the Sonra proto BAE,” reads the product’s description. The description also says that the sneakers will be shipped around December, which may be an indication of when we can expect a full-fledged Sonra launch.
