Although the New York Mets are out of the Major League Baseball playoffs, that isn’t stopping Renarts from delivering a collab with Reebok inspired by the team — specifically members from the lineup that hit the field in 1986.
The Renarts x Reebok “Dead End Kids” LX8500 arrives Tuesday and will retail for $130. The shoe will be available at the East Northport, N.Y.-based storefront that day starting at 7 p.m. ET, and will be available online on renarts.com starting Oct. 22 at 11 a.m. ET.
The shoe’s design and colorway, according to Renarts, was inspired by retired all-stars Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry, with nods to the team’s successes on the field as well as the darkness of fighting, egos, and drug and alcohol abuse off the field. The shoe’s name came from a Sports Illustrated cover in February 1995 featuring Gooden and Strawberry, with a story documenting their troubles and deeming them “The Dead End Kids.”
Renarts dressed Reebok’s LX8500 with blue suede on the toe (similar to the team’s hue), black throughout the upper for the darkness of the period for the team’s star athletes, and orange and blue 3M piping (a nod to the neon signs of Shea Stadium, home of the ’86 Mets).
Aside from the shoe, Renarts will offer three “Dead End Kids” custom T-shirts (retailing for $28) and rerelease two of its exclusive collaboration hoodies with Mitchell & Ness ($70).
