The collection includes four shoe styles with premium fabrications that debuted on Friday at eight Vans x Pop-In@Nordstrom pop-up stores and online.
Nordstrom’s vice president of creative projects, Olivia Kim, designed the range, reimagining the sportswear brand’s iconic silhouettes with a touch of swish whimsy.
Speaking to Footwear News at a launch event at Resident in Los Angeles, Kim said she was inspired by high-low fashion trends and versatility.
“Having a desk job where you’re just sitting there is less modern — people are running around, interacting with teams, walking to meetings,” she explained. “This idea that a sneaker can be fashionable and functional checks off two things on your list. Also, there’s a mix of streetwear elements and high fashion.”
For women, the line has fuzzy shearling Chukka Boots and Old Skool kicks in cotton-candy pink and baby blue. The look reminded her of “grunge, ’90s candy raver” style.
“I wore Old Skools as a kid growing up, and I always loved pink,” she said. “This idea of taking a skateboard boy-shoe and putting a girly touch on it feels like a fun way of interpreting something that I always wish I had as a kid, only now I’ve been able to do that.”
Men’s styles in the collaboration include velvet chukkas in port royale and emerald green.
The rich gem tones reminded her of varsity jackets, she said, “Like ‘Friday Night Lights’ – thinking about it from a back-to-school idea.”
A selection of men’s and women’s apparel and accessories are included in the collection, available through Sept. 4.
The kickoff event included a performance by longtime Vans fan Ty Dolla $ign.
