Kmart is jumping through hoops for the launch of Risewear, an exclusive line of performance and casual footwear.
The collection will include styles for the entire family, all retailing for less than $45. While it is launching now with men’s, women’s and kids’ will follow for holiday 2016.
To introduce the line, available for sale today, Kmart’s sponsoring the The Rise Challenge, set to take place in Los Angeles on Saturday. It features a series of interactive fan-focused sporting entertainment experiences that include competitions between some of the world’s top basketball dunkers on custom-branded half courts at Kmart parking lots in six cities.
The main attraction is the dunk contest featuring current Risewear athlete Taurian “Air Up There” Fontenette, along with the nation’s top four dunkers — Chris Staples, Guy Dupuy, Porter Maberry and Jonathan Clark — as they compete for the grand prize.
The first Rise Challenge champion will receive a signature capsule collection contract with Risewear that includes a self-designed shoe in their name, an apparel and accessories line, and a brand ambassador position for one year.
The event also features free customization stations, where fans can add a laser-printed design to their new shoes or have them airbrushed by a graffiti artist.
After the Los Angeles event, the dunk contest will continue on Sunday at Kmart in North Hollywood, Calif., on Sherman Way and wind up on Aug. 20 at Kmart in Chicago on West Addison Street.
Free digital tickets to the events can be downloaded via the Kmart app on a smartphone device.
