Foot Locker employee Jadyn Brammeier Vasquez says she recognized the look on a young shopper’s face after overhearing the boy’s mother tell him they couldn’t afford new Air Jordan sneakers.
“I went over to her and asked her, ‘Do you think it would be OK if I bought these for him?’ ” Vasquez told Fox 35 Orlando. Although the boy’s mother hesitated, Vasquez was able to convince her by reminding her Christmas was near.
The act of sneaker kindness happened at Leesburg, Fla.’s Via Port Mall Foot Locker location, where Vasquez recently noticed 10-year-old Jonas Nielsen and his mother shopping. “He was like, ‘Oh, I like these!’ And I said, ‘I don’t know why you’re making her work, because you’re not getting those — we can’t afford them right now,” said the boy’s mother, Gigi Pena.
The child’s plea hit home with Vasquez, who told Fox 35 Orlando that she was in foster care when she was Nielsen’s age and was unable to buy new sneakers. She decided to foot the bill for the $95 Air Jordans, gifting Nielsen with the sneakers, which he’s been meticulous about keeping clean.
“It just brightened my whole day, and it was my birthday and she didn’t know,” Nielsen said.
