Perhaps Nikes are Pope’s go-to kicks for breaking a sweat. An eagle-eyed fan spotted the same jacket in a previous episode.

Speaking to FN in a previous interview, “Scandal” costume designer Lyn Elizabeth Paolo said that she and Washington choose footwear for the character first before determining the rest of the outfit.
“I sometimes feel, as do many actors, that the shoes are the most important part of a costume,” Paolo explained. “That choice informs both the audience and the actor. I believe strongly that when you’ve found the right shoe for a character, everything else flows from that, and it’s a seamless transition for the actor to become the human that’s on the written page.”
