When Patrick Cox reviewed the photos from Gucci’s much-buzzed-about resort show in London last week, he saw a very familiar shoe style.
“They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so I guess I’ll take their homage to my iconic Wannabe Union Jack loafers as a compliment,” Cox said of Gucci’s similar style, which featured its signature horsebit. “I wasn’t at the Gucci show, but my phone lit up once it was over with editors and stylists sending me pics of the incredibly similar Gucci loafer.”
Cox said his own Wannabe style was important to him because in the mid ’90s, “it was the emblem of Cool Brittania with every amazing brand like Oasis wearing them.”
“I launched the Wannabe in 1993, and I was selling close to a million pairs a year by the time I designed this Union Jack loafer in 1996. My ad campaign of that year featured these loafers and an English Bulldog,” he recalled.

In fact, the designer is cooking up his own Union Jack relaunch.
“I, too, think the time is right to revisit perhaps my most famous shoe,” he said. “I’ve always flown the flag for Britain, so to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday and the 40th anniversary of the birth of punk, I have reissued my renowned Union Jack loafer and designed a ‘punked’ version, too, with studs and a safety pin.”
