Why Vera Wang is Moving Her Runway Show to Paris

Vera Wang is the latest designer to make a change to their New York Fashion Week show schedule. For the fall 2017 season, Wang will skip her usual slot on the city’s calendar. This follows news that Jason Wu’s Hugo Boss women’s wear label will also be taking a break from NYFW.

Instead, Wang has opted to take her show to Paris — but not as a traditional runway show that one might expect. The French capital will form the theme of a short film through which Wang has chosen to present her collection. The film will be released online on Feb. 28.

Wang is set to receive the Légion d’Honneur in Paris on the first day of Paris Fashion Week. The film, she says, is her way of returning the favor. It will be “a bit of an ode to Paris,” she told WWD, hinting that the collection will also most likely be a tribute to the City of Light.

Does she plan to revert to her erstwhile New York slot in the future? “Probably we will,” she said, “but maybe in a very different format,” noting her frustration with the schedule plus the city’s lack of viable locations. “It’s a battle royale for everybody — stylists, model agencies — everybody is just crammed in.”
