Designer Isa Tapia’s fall ’16 inspirations started during her European travels last summer and extended to the eclectic fashion of the late David Bowie. “I’d say the vibe is ‘psychedelic flamenco’ meets ‘Bowie Starman toreros,’ ” said Tapia, who launched her line in 2012.
Here, the New York-based designer reveals the five things that influenced her latest collection:
“It’s very unfortunate given that David Bowie recently passed away, but this collection continues to show how he inspired so many people. Six months ago I was sketching on a plane and listening to the iconic ‘[Rise and Fall of] Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars,’ and I wound up sketching these crazy but amazing shoes, which started the whole collection.”
“My trip to Spain last summer was such a dream. We went through southern Spain from Costa Blanca to Valencia into Formentera and Ibiza. I love to travel and this trip was truly remarkable.”
“I started collecting vintage clothing during my travels, which really inspired me. In Madrid, I purchased a flamenco dancer’s dress, in Alicante I found a torero’s bolero jacket, and in Ibiza some neon psychedelic sequins.”
“The cosmos continues to be something I am fascinated with. The idea of infinite possibilities of the universe really resonates with me.”
“I played around with mirrored metallic even updated a few silhouettes by adding a platform Mary Jane and a lot of round toe shapes.”
