Karl Lagerfeld’s fall ’16 Haute Couture collection for Fendi had no shortage of wow moments. Presented in Rome on Thursday, the collection was debuted at the Trevi Fountain, where models walked over water on a Plexiglass runway. And while the clothes were extravagant indeed — handcut furs and laces taking thousands of laborious hours to complete — the shoes also held their own here. Very much so.
The footwear had a slight sportswear feel. Stretch ankle sock booties had subtle varsity striping and metallic lacing. The heels were slightly curved and tied in to the clothing’s nod to the early 20th century. To further the shoes more — this is couture, after all — hand-embroidered floral prints or whip-stitching were applied overtop.
Lagerfeld’s Fendi collection took a more modern stance than his Chanel show, which offered neutral suede thigh-highs. He did experiment there with exaggerated shoulder pads, though. For more of the Fendi shoes, see below:
