Simple, refined and elegant — three of these words are not in Fendi’s vocabulary. For fall ’16, the Italian label showcased its signature jazziness via kooky men’s sneakers and maximalist embellishments.
Under the creative helm of Karl Lagerfeld, the luxury brand has shifted to a more peacocky aesthetic. This season the sneakers played on Fendi’s signature Monster eye motifs, done on slip-on and low-top sneakers. Mixed materials included different suedes or embossed leathers.
The label’s runway styles included speed-laced sneakers covered in color-blocked furs, finished in either shaggy or shearling treatments. While the show also featured fur slippers, it appears they didn’t make it into production.
More subdued styles in the collection included runners with a single lightning bolt on the side — Fendi’s take on minimal — as well as simple court sneakers in white, navy or red leather.
Meanwhile, an homage to Lagerfeld saw slip-ons and high-tops with studs formed into the shape of his iconic sunglasses. Call the man self-absorbed, but the schtick sells.
