Christian Louboutin is adding to his beauty selection, this time diving into the world of fragrances.
The Paris designer, famous for his red-soled shoes, unveiled three new scents this week: Bikini Questa Sera, Tornade Blonde and Trouble in Heaven. He already makes nail and lip lacquers. For his scents, Louboutin was inspired by the stroke of a piano key, and each scent is is meant to evoke “a vibrating ‘ping'” that “reverberates straight through from top to bottom.”
Louboutin told Footwear News that the fragrance was a natural extension of his aim to allow women to express their femininity.
“This is what I try to evoke with shoes and now with the alchemy of fragrance,” he said. “I want to give women the means to express themselves and to delight in their femininity.”
He also described a moment when he realized the power of fragrance.
“I took an elevator once that had a very strong, super-sexy smell. I was imagining someone like Sophia Loren, but when I looked over it was Margaret Thatcher! I was shocked, but then I understood,” Louboutin said. “There was something quite feminine about her that you would never see in a picture. That’s the thing about fragrance-it can reveal a part of you that is held completely prisoner of the identity that people project onto you.”
Louboutin worked with designer Thomas Heatherwick of Heatherwick Studios — the brains behind the cauldron for the 2012 Olympics and buildings in Singapore and Cape Town — to create the sculptural glass bottles.
He tells FN that he enjoyed the fragrance development process from start to finish, including “collaborating with the noses to working with Heatherwick to smelling the submissions on different people till I found something I loved,” he said.
The three fragrances are available now and retail for $275 each on ChristianLouboutin.com.
