Trendy Label Self Portrait Looks to Robert Clergerie Shoe Classics For Spring ’17 Capsule Collection

Self Portrait has joined forces with French footwear label Robert Clergerie on a five-piece capsule collection for spring ’17. The range reworks some Robert Clergerie classics such as the raffia slip-on sneaker and the backless loafer using Self Portrait’s vocabulary, which is dipped in contrasts: masculine, feminine, modern and romantic.

Buckled, leather straps embellished with silver eyelets are used throughout the range, adding a tougher edge on a preppy pointed-toe pump with satin bows. They are also used to add a fresh take on the brand’s popular slip-on sneakers, which come in beige and navy raffia and a textured fabric from Self Portrait’s spring ’17 range, presented during New York Fashion Week.

The focus on contrasts also plays out with the materials of choice, with the Lolli — a pointed-toe buckled loafer in the range — featuring contrasting suede and patent-leather panels.

“I have admired Robert Clergerie for years, so when the opportunity to collaborate was presented, I didn’t hesitate. What I love about the brand is their design approach, which balances the masculine and the feminine,” said Han Chong, Self Portrait’s founder and creative director.

“I was really drawn to the masculine shapes from the archives of Robert Clergerie and reinterpreted these styles with a feminine twist. This is the same idea that can be found in our spring 2017 ready-to-wear collection. I wanted the shapes of the shoes to be easy to wear but still impactful on the foot. We played with the idea of mixing textures: suede, patent leather and hardware.”

From his part, Clergerie creative director Roland Mouret said that he was drawn to the “juxtaposition of the two brands” and was happy to continue the company’s “tradition of collaboration.” The French heritage brand has previously collaborated with British labels including Sibling and Matthew Miller and most recently launched a capsule collection with Disney inspired by “Alice Through the Looking Glass.”

Self Portrait, which is popular in the contemporary market for its cocktail dresses, has also been launching additional categories through collaborations in the past year, including an eyewear range created in partnership with Le Specs.

Prices for the collection range between £315-430 pounds or $409-$559.
