Jill Martin Opens Her Shoe Closet And Reveals Her Go-To Designers

TV personality, sportscaster and style expert Jill Martin has added a new role to her resumé: creative director of QVC’s G.I.L.I line of contemporary fashion and accessories.

Before heading to Rio de Janeiro to cover the Olympics, she shared some shoe tips with FN.

BRAND MIX: “My main focus has always been fashion and function. Among the heels I’m most comfortable in and love are Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, Gucci, Aquazurra and QVC’s G.I.L.I line. I have shoes with studs, pompoms and fringe. I’m a jeans and T-shirt girl, so shoes are my statement piece.”

DOWNTIME: “Either I’m dressed up or down. I collect Golden Goose sneakers. They’re funky, detailed with camouflage and glitter. Or I’m in flip-flips from Tkees and Havaianas.”

BEST SHOE HAUNT: “I travel a lot and like to pick up shoes wherever I go. It reminds me of where I’ve been. Years ago, on Anacapri on the island of Capri, there was a cobbler who made shoes similar to Hermes sandals. I bought a pair, and they [remain] my most comfortable.”

PRICIEST PAIR: “Whenever I reach a milestone in my career, I buy myself a pair of extravagant shoes such as a pair by Aquazurra for $2,200. I was in love with them. However, I consigned them a year later. The heel was six inches, and I never wore them. They were a beautiful piece of art. I now believe in buying footwear that lasts. I rarely go with trends.”

CLOSET ORGANIZATION: “I don’t have lots of space in my Manhattan apartment, so I switch shoes out each season, keeping them in a storage unit in the building. In my closet, I get plastic bins for $1.99 at The Container Store and take a picture of each pair that I tape on the box. I then stack them on shelves and the floor. It’s my mini boutique.”

FAVORITE RED-CARPET LOOK: “I’m usually in a simple jumpsuit or dress with a knockout pair of shoes. Recently, I presented an award to designer Dennis Basso at  New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and wore a red beaded dress of his and a pair of Manolo Blahnik’s lace-up Xafiore sandal with roses. I also wear them with skinny jeans.”

STANDOUT G.I.L.I STYLES: “I want to offer women shoes that are classic enough to be worn each season. My signature look is the Jill, a pump on a 3¾-inch heel and the Georgette, on a 2½-inch heel. We do the same designs in camouflage, denim and suede. However, nothing is simple or obvious. Everything has a twist.”

FASHION TIPS: “Footwear can be used like a statement necklace. You can have one pop in your outfit, and it can be shoes. But make sure you’re always comfortable. A beautiful pair of shoes is only beautiful if you feel comfortable in them.”
