How This Celebrity-Favorite Biodegradable Shoe Brand Is Helping the Peruvian Amazon

The stars aligned for a new organic footwear brand that supports a good cause.

AnnaLynne McCord, Natasha Henstridge, Lance Bass and Jaime King were among the celebrities on Friday at the Not For Sale x Z Shoes benefit in Los Angeles. The charity event helped raised funds for Not For Sale, an organization that fights modern slavery and exploitation around the world.

Z Shoes operates under the same ethos through its line of shoes constructed from high quality rubber and cotton sourced from the Peruvian Amazon, where formerly unemployed locals are now earning a living. The sneakers are available in styles for men and women for $96 online.

“Every other shoe in my closet is going to be in some landfill in three generations, but these shoes will be back in the Earth,” Not For Sale founder and president David Batsone told Footwear news, adding that the shoes are produced in partnership with the Camuto Group.

“Not for Sale helps get people out of slavery, but sometimes when you pull someone out of a rice mill or brothel, then now what? What put them in situations of vulnerability they’re still in that today,” he explained. “So we started creating companies that create economic platforms around the world that are high risk and return profit to the communities.”

The organization has seven companies under its banner, including RBBL beverages.

Actor Oliver Trevena, who serves as the ambassador for Z Shoes, said he got involved with Not For Sale around six years ago. “There are more slaves today than ever before … it’s swept under the table because it is so shocking,” Trevena said. “Z Shoes is great for the environment, it’s natural-based and we create employment in the Amazon, in villages where people had no jobs.”
