Award season is upon is, which means standout fashion and statement shoes. FN caught up with celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger to talk all things footwear, including the hottest red carpet brands and her predictions for “fun and playful” looks.
1. Overall, what are some of the biggest footwear trends you expect to see on the red carpet?
“I think that the really cool thing we’re seeing becoming more of a pattern, shorter hemlines on the carpet, shoes will be become more of a focus, really exciting, adds another dimension to style and dressing for the red carpet. You’ll definitely see a variety in silhouette and what not.”
2. How is this different from last year’s awards season fashion?
“What’s really cool is people are embracing new silhouettes because of that, emphasis put on the shoe choice, I don’t think we’ll see as many of the classic, elegant evening styles. I’m expecting more fun, punchy options, more glamorous and glittery looks. It might be that the shoe completes the look and an emphasis on the perfect accessory will come into play.”
3. What will be a few of the top brands you expect to spot on top actresses?
“Christian Louboutin has nailed the market for really playful, glamorous, whimsical fun designs, always brings the glamour without question. Paul Andrew who is a newcomer his collection this season was amazing, I hope to see some of his shoes. I think Sergio Rossi, Casadei, Giuseppe, Brian Atwood, I am excited to see if there are any newcomers. Nicholas Kirkwood, Sophia Webster, she did really sparkly heels, Paul Andrew did the lucite heels, people are experimenting with texture and materials. Coupled with the perfect can’t go wrong evening shoe.”
4. Because of a history with long gowns at awards, do you think actresses sometimes play it safe with their shoe choices?
“[Styling] is always about complimenting your overall look and being fluid. Choosing a black shoe is not a bad thing, but it needs to be right for the overall look. Fashion is about embracing and experimenting with style and shoe choices. I’m excited to see what everyone has in store, it will be a great season.”
5. Do you have a favorite nominated film and nominated actress of the moment?
“I always love Cate Blanchette, Alicia Vikander was in I think she’s devine, I love her style choices, I’m excited to see what she wears for sure. Jennifer Lawrence is amazing, I thought ‘Joy’ was great.”
