They were Zappos’ dynamic duo for many years — and now Tony Hsieh has shared some heartfelt sentiments about Fred Mossler, who will leave the company in June.
Mossler, who has been a huge force at Zappos for the last 17 years, announced last week he was departing because “the time is right.”
In exclusive email comments provided to FN, Hsieh said: “The short answer is that Zappos won’t ever be able to replace Fred. The longer answer is that under holacracy, Fred currently holds 12 different roles that represent 12 different focuses of work at Zappos. Fred and I went through each of the roles and we both feel that we will easily have the existing work covered by assigning different people to each of those 12 roles. This is actually a huge benefit of holacracy.”
On a more personal note, Hsieh said that outside of the work, “many people at Zappos, including myself, feel that Fred represents a lot of the inspiration, heart, and soul of our company. While we are excited about the many up and coming leaders in the company that each have their own special strengths, I don’t think anyone will ever be able to replace that unique spirit that Fred represents.“
Moving forward, the friends and business partners will continue to work together on a variety of other projects, including Downtown Project, Nacho Daddy and the Life is Beautiful festival. “So I think we’ll be seeing each other pretty much the same amount of time as we did before,” Hsieh said.
