Socks and sandals? That was the message Versace delivered for its spring ’16 collection, which was shown in Milan. Donatella Versace seems a tad late to the game here — designers have been showing socks with sandals for seasons now — especially if she was going for shock factor. (And judging by the buff, shirtless men that opened the curtain for the beginning of the show, she was.) On the runway, leather sandals with braided straps were paired with cashmere socks.
The normcore look seemed especially out of place at a fashion house like Versace, which prides itself on the excess and flamboyance of fashion. In fact, most of the label’s footwear fell a bit flat this season. Leather lace-up dress shoes featured square toes, a silhouette that is indeed new but not necessarily good. Some of the dress styles also played with two-toned leathers, a subtle design element but by far Versace’s most playful touch this season. Brown and black leathers together? Alert the press!
