Stella McCartney’s resort ’16 collection was presented via the designer’s signature garden-party theme, a recurring format she’s done for the past few resort shows. This season, she showed at New York’s Elizabeth Street Garden, displaying embroidered floral shoes inspired by vibrant Cuban culture.
The star-studded event included attendees like Alexa Chung, Liv Tyler, Cara Delevigne, Alicia Keys and Miranda Kerr. As models roamed about the grassy space in flowy maxi dresses, McCartney’s footwear was presented on Greek-style pillars or glass tables. This season’s shoes focused on denim and embroidery, with espadrilles and sandals done in a sweet blue jean-yellow flower combination.
McCartney continued her zigzag platform soles on slide sandals that featured laser-cut lacework on its leather upper. She also returned to her signature star print on denim espadrilles and used star-shaped cutouts on glittered sneakers with roped midsoles. The latter style could have easily afforded to lose a design element or two.
Considering her avoidance of leather, the footwear was impressive in managing to evoke luxury appeal, despite being made from alternative materials or synthetics — tanned satin almost appeared to be suede. Floral embroidery, inspired by poppies and sunflowers, blended in with the surroundings quite literally.
