Tabitha Simmons, Paul Andrew Nab CFDA Award Nominations

Tabitha Simmons has nabbed a coveted CFDA award nomination for Accessories Designer of the Year — and Paul Andrew will vie for the Swarovski Award for Accessory Design, which recognizes emerging talent.

The award nominations were announced at the “Top of the Rock” at Rockefeller Center on Monday evening in New York.

It was a major moment for both footwear designers. Simmons, who won the Swarovski award for Accessory Design in 2012, has been dramatically growing and diversifying her collection over the past few years.

Andrew, who won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize in November, is one of the industry’s fastest-rising stars. After receiving the nod, Andrew said, “I’m over the moon. What a great honor it is to be nominated. It really feels like the CFDA is behind me. Having won the Fashion Fund completely changed my business in such a short matter of time, but again, it just feels like such an honor.”

CFDA CEO Steven Kolb was in attendance to help announce the nominees, along with Diane Von Furstenberg. He told FN, “Tabitha won the Swarovski award for Accessory a few years ago, and she was also a runner-up winner of the CFDA Fashion Fund. [Paul] won the CFDA Fashion Fund, and we’ll see if he is a winner of Swarovski. But I think that there’s an opportunity, and they both are capable of owning that, of being a luxury, strong shoe brand. Both of them have the opportunity to really seize that and be that next generation luxury American shoe brand.”

Simmons will compete alongside Alexander Wang, Irene Neuwirth, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler and Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen, who all are in the running for accessory designer of the year.

In addition to Andrew, other nominees in the Swarovski Award for Accessory Design category include Eva Zuckerman for Eva Fehren and Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel for Mansur Gavriel.

It was also announced that designer Betsey Johnson will receive the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. Johnson’s excitement was more the evident as she moved to the podium to say a few words and express her gratitude.

She talked to FN about the award saying,” I knew 2015 was going to be a shocking year. It just seemed like this is the time to get it. I’m in heaven. I get all the love I need and beyond from my fans, but from the industry–this is really big. I’ve always been a little outside of the box. I loved being in the box. I just had to, [like] Frank Sinatra [sang], do it my way.”

Johnson wore a dress from 1965, which was one of the first pieces she ever designed for Paraphernalia, paired with lace-up boots from the 70s. “I’m vintage all the way. I think they might be by this great shoe designer Peter Fox from a hundred years ago.”
