Professional surfer Bethany Hamilton, who was thrown into the spotlight in 2003 when she lost an arm in an attack by a 14-foot tiger shark in the waters of Hawaii, is back in the news. This time, it’s all good. She and husband Adam Dirks, who appeared on season 25 of “The Amazing Race,” are expecting a son.
Over the years, Hamilton has encouraged others facing challenges through her many public appearances and speaking engagements. Her story was told in 2011 in the biopic “Soul Surfer.”
Hamilton, currently working on a follow-up film, “Surfs Like a Girl,” will take a hiatus to focus on her new role as parent.
In an online video released by the couple, Hamilton said, “I often forget I have one arm, but when I think about it — a squirming baby and changing the diaper and just me and this squirming baby — it could be really challenging.”
With Hamilton and Dirks sharing a love of the outdoors, it’s likely the couple’s already placed an order for a mini surfboard, in addition to a crib and carriage. However, it might be some time before they allow him to follow in his father’s footsteps and test his survival skills in Hawaii’s wilderness.
Since the couple make Hawaii their home, their lifestyle’s relaxed and more often than not simply calls for a bathing suit and flip-flops.
In fact, Hamilton has a signature sandal line called Cobian Footwear, under the Bethany Hamilton label. They’re available on Cobianusa.com and retail from $30 to $35 for kids and adult styles, with part of the proceeds donated to Friends of Bethany Hamilton. Hamilton also serves as a brand ambassador for the company.
