Charl Schwartzel, the 2011 U.S. Masters Champion, won the Alfred Dunhill Championship on Sunday in his native South Africa. For the Nike-sponsored golfer, it was his fourth time winning the event in the last decade.
Schwartzel, 31, won the tournament in front of fans in his homeland wearing a pair of the Nike Lunar Control 4 golf spikes.
What’s more, he used other Nike gear to shoot a score of 15 under par for the tournament, besting the competition by four strokes. He also played with the company’s RZN prototype golf ball and its vapor prototype driver.
According to the Beaverton, Ore.-based company, “the new footwear provides golf athletes a stable platform off which to base their swing, helping to generate power and control from the ground up.”
In particular, the statement said the cleats’ tongue “has been redesigned to wrap ergonomically around the ankle and provide a natural break when walking, and the athletic design of the Nike Lunar Control 4 is highlighted by a Swoosh logo on the vamp, an iconic aesthetic most familiar in the Nike Mercurial football boot.”
After winning, Schwartzel secured his spot in South African history, becoming the third player from the country to win 10 times on the European Tour.
