The Inspiration Behind Havaianas’ 2015 Flip-Flops

As the senior merchandising manager for Havaianas USA, Tara Wessells is an expert in translating Brazilian fashion for American audiences. And for 2015, she added another country to the mix: Bhutan. “In the majority of our collection, you’ll see the prints come straight from their culture, and from the landscapes and the people,” Wessells said, noting that Havaianas’ designers travel each year to a new destination. This year’s choice was particularly successful. “We found real brand synergy between Bhutan and Brazil. They both stand for joy, happiness, vibrancy.” It was such a clear hit that Wessells brought in 20 percent more styles for the stateside offering. “We try to curate what makes the most sense for each market, and what made sense for the U.S. this time was a lot,” she said.
