MacGyver’s 30th Anniversary Inspires DIY Shoe Customization

The fall ’15 TV season is off and running. While there are lots of new shows in the lineup to check out — from “Angel From Hell” on CBS to “Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris” on NBC — this time of year also reminds us of some of the hits from years past.

Topping the list is MacGyver, celebrating its 30th anniversary this season. The show, which ran for 137 episodes, starred Richard Dean Anderson, who portrayed a secret agent working as a troubleshooter for a fictional U.S. government agency. He was best known for solving complex problems by making things out of ordinary objects — generally opting for non-violent resolutions since he preferred not to handle a gun.

The character’s unique way of approaching problems even prompted Merriam-Webster Online to turn MacGyver into a verb: “To make use of surrounding materials to build a contraption or to get out of life’s crazy things.”

Taking a page out of MacGyver’s book, Footwear News has put together a range of shoe accessories that allow you put a customized spin on a ready-made shoe by adding novelty laces, bows and ornaments. While the outcome is more fashion than function, the same set of rules apply.

Here are some accessories to get you started:

1. Doohickies by Hickies puts a new spin on the traditional lace with a series of colorful no-tie shoe laces for kids that easily fits through the existing eyelets.

2. For those with Western fever, Cavender’s offers silver charms and a beaded boot bracket that gussies up any cowboy boot.

3. For a more traditional take, The Dessy Group does an elegant jeweled shoe clip with a vintage feel that dresses up a simple ballet flat for evening wear.

4. The classic lace gets an update with the Galaxy JC shoe laces, detailed with an outer space motif that can give a pair of kicks a celestial touch.

5. Embobag combines function with fashion with its novelty sole covers designed to protect outsoles from the rain and snow.

6. As part of the ongoing colored lace trend, The Tie Bar offers a wide range of laces in fun colors, from orange to burgundy, that allow guys to spice up the most basic wingtip.
