Former Toms Exec Debuts New Brand Liuid Online

Footwear-industry veteran Stan Hu is taking off on his own.

On Aug. 18, Hu is set to debut Liuid, a collection of men’s and women’s casual, dress and performance looks, at Liuid.com, retailing from $80 to $150.

Hu, 35, emigrated to the U.S. from China with his family in 1985. He’s a University of Alabama graduate and a veteran of the U.S. military. His fluency in Chinese helped land him a job in China for Brown Shoe Co. After 12 years there, he found a new home at Toms, where he was VP of global sourcing.

To put his shoe-biz expertise to the test, he launched Henderson, Nev.-based Liuid with a China-based manufacturing partner.

“I’m bringing all my knowledge [to Liuid],” said Hu. “Brown Shoe taught me to build, manufacture and source, while Toms showed me how to make a business meaningful.” Even the brand’s name has meaning for Hu — it’s an acronym of loyalty, inspiration, unity, innovation, difference.

Among his first initiatives is working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. On Aug. 18, Hu will donate a piano to an 8-year-old girl with cancer. He also supports veterans’ groups. “I believe in inspiring others,” said Hu, about his commitment to giving back.
