“I have been looking forward to wearing this shoe for quite some time. It’s a design I’ve been involved with ever since my first year with Nike,” McIlroy said in a statement. “It gives me the confidence needed to maximize power in my swing with reliable control on the ground, especially off the tee.”
McIlroy’s golf swing, according to Nike, hits at more than 120 mph, and to hit that speed he needs a strong base. The Lunar Control 4 was inspired by his swing and was developed for McIlroy to have the strong base he needs.
The shoe will retail for $170 and initially launch on Nike’s website on Nov. 27, with the shoe being made available to select Nike retailers on Dec. 1. It will be available in three colorways for men (black and white, white and wolf grey, white and bright crimson) and three for women (black and white, white and wolf grey, pure platinum and bright crimson).
The Lunar Control 4 uses some of the brand’s technological innovations, including Flywire technology for midfoot lateral support, a new external heel counter to keep the foot in place while engaged in a swing, a reengineered lightweight microfiber upper for a soft and unrestricted feel, a tongue that wraps ergonomically around the ankle for a natural break when walking, and the same outsole and Lunarlon midsole from the Nike Lunar Control 3.
McIlroy will debut the shoes during the upcoming tournament in Dubai, the Race to Dubai.
