Fila is sharing its athletic heritage with a new generation. The brand announced this week that it has created an exclusive capsule lifestyle collection for youth-focused retailer Urban Outfitters. The line consists of apparel, accessories and an updated version of Fila’s iconic Cage basketball sneaker.
The shoe, which debuted in 1993, has been modernized with a tonal suede upper and matching rubber sole. Other elements include a cushioned EVA midsole and memory-foam ankle collar for comfort.
“The Cage selection is an authentic and unique product that speaks to the thriving retro market and millennial consumers,” said Louis Colon, director of heritage and lifestyle product for Fila.
He noted that the inspiration for the colorway came from the Fila x UO apparel collection, which features tennis staples from the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, such as striped polo tees, raglan sweatshirts and sporty jackets, all adorned with the original 1973 Fila F-Box red, navy and ecru logo.
“This collection is surely a large step in in the partnership between Fila and Urban Outfitters,” said Colon. “This collection tells a timeless story of where sport meets fashion to a millennial consumer. We look for this to blossom.”
According to Colon, Fila and Urban Outfitters have a longstanding partnership. The athletic brand’s Heritage footwear began appearing on the retailer’s website a few seasons ago. “This is a great step in solidifying a relationship between both brands,” he said.
The Fila x UO line will be available at 94 retail locations and online, beginning on Sept. 7. The exclusive Cage style for men and women will retail for $100.
