The shoe of choice for legendary rap group Run DMC was the Adidas Superstar, the favorite shoe of the group’s deejay, Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell. With the anniversary of his untimely death approaching, friends of Mizell have come together to create a limited-edition Superstar dedicated to him.
The Adidas Superstar Pro Model. limited to 150 pairs, has a retail price of $300. The shoe is only available at Shorewood, Wisc., retailer Clicks, a store owned by Run DMC rapper Darryl “DMC” McDaniels and Eric “Shake” James, a friend of Mizell.
“Adidas was very supportive. They always show love and support to the Run DMC brand. We got the blessing to do a limited run in this one boutique location,” said Adam Padilla, president and chief creative officer of the creative agency BrandFire.
Padilla helped bring the ideas of McDaniels and Shake together for the shoe, an all-white silhouette with the signature Adidas three-stripe branding on its upper with gold accents throughout the shoe, including word “Jay” in the classic Run DMC bars logo, with the Adidas trefoil logo on the heel, the Superstar branding on the upper and the gold record plaque-resembling design on the tongue that boasts the trefoil logo, Jay logo and Adidas branding.
In addition to the shoe, buyers will receive a limited-edition t-shirt and a shoebox that resembles a milk crate full of records.
“To keep your Adidas shoes clean and white, the best place to put them is your shoebox. I love to have a collector’s box that looks great in the closet or on display without necessarily looking like a shoebox,” Padilla said. “I want the box to be as much of a coveted collector’s item as the shoe.”
Clicks is located at 1916 East Capital Drive in Shorewood, Wisc.
