Shoes were on display last night at New York City’s Annual amfAR Gala to benefit and raise awareness for the AIDS epidemic.
Chairman of the board, Kenneth Cole, talked to FN on the red carpet about the event and its importance.
“I always become excited about this event and I love that all these people come out with this wonderful sense of intention and purpose. There is a real sense of ‘I’m going to look good,’ ‘I’m going to have a good time,’ and at the same time ‘I’m going to know that I’m doing good.’ This is important and tonight is part of something meaningful. We wouldn’t be where we are if it wasn’t for all the people here tonight.”
Cole, who is at the forefront of AIDS public awareness efforts, said “[The event] is a celebration of how far we’ve come, that we can truly see light at the end of the tunnel and we’re just so close to that cure.”
For designer Donna Karan, who said fashion week is going to be “crazy, crazy,” AIDS is something she’s been involved with the from very beginning. She said, “I felt it was unacceptable to see the amount of people that have passed from AIDS. Even today, even living with the virus is unacceptable, and hopefully by all coming here together by raising awareness we can get the job done.”
Alexandre Birman also walked the carpet and talked about his recent collaboration with Disney’s live-action film “Cinderella.”
“It’s extremely important for young girls to discover to be Cinderella, and to dream. To be part of it is amazing. I’m going to try and make my little daughters become Cinderellas, as well.”
Since amfAR’s gala kicks off fashion week, “Gossip Girl” star Kelly Rutherford, in Manolo Blahnik stopped by to talk shows. “Oh my god, well, I love Sun Jung Wan, she’s one of my favorite designers. She’s out of Korea, so I’m going to go to her show this year,” she said. “I’m going to see Monique Lhuillier and Marchesa.” The actress also talked about the upcoming Academy Award and said she will be rooting for Michael Keaton and Eddie Redmayne: “I don’t really know where to begin, they’re all great.”
Other gala guests included Kendall Jenner, Iman, Heidi Klum, Karlie Kloss, Jeremy Piven, and Rosario Dawson, Harry Belafonte and Patrick Demarchelier. Dawson, Belafonte and Demarchelier were all honored. Check out the gallery above to see some of the best shoes.
